Updates

Another Rough Rider champion (5:45 p.m.): Roosevelt junior Taegan Olson won the Class 4A girls pole vault for the second year in a row after topping 13-1.50 — the second-best mark in the state this spring. She joined long jumper Jayden Nohr as Roosevelt’s second two-time champ on Thursday. — Matt Schubert

Back on top (5:38 p.m.): Coal Ridge senior Brilee Jensen returned to the top of the podium in the Class 3A girls shot put a year after just missing out on a repeat title. Jensen won the event in 2023 and claimed gold again with a toss of 40-3.25 one year after Woodland Park’s Jaedyn Kohn edged her out by 7.25 inches. — Matt Schubert

Long jump redemption (4:59 p.m.): After taking runner-up last year in the Class 3A long jump, when she lost by about a half-inch and fouled on her final jump, University junior Jordan Halley came through in the clutch to win the crown on Thursday. Halley jumped 18 feet, 3.5 inches on her final jump, trampolining her into the lead to beat Resurrection Christian senior Addison Barker (17-4.25).

“I was nervous, but I had a talk with my coach and then I did a quick approach off the board,” Halley said. “I sprinted as hard as I could, jumped as far as I could. I really wanted it last year, my first year (doing the event), and just came up a little short. … The big difference between last year and this one was that I had a lot more confidence in myself.” — Kyle Newman

A back-to-back 3A high jump champ (4:02 pm): Centauri senior Troy Sowards won the 3A high jump championship for the second straight year. He cleared six feet, nine inches on his first try, which secured another crown for him. Sowards’ bid to match his personal best of 6-11 was tantalizingly close, particularly on his second attempt. He won the state title last year by clearing 6-09 as well. Berthoud junior Jayce Newbill and Bayside sophomore Tanner Neeley both maxed out at 6-07. — Corey Masisak

New 2025 best in Class 5A high jump (3:37 p.m.): In the boys 5A high jump, Legacy senior Devin Shea set a state-best mark in the event for this season with a jump of six feet, nine inches. That gave the Colorado Mesa commit the title over Fort Collins senior Finn Conway Reiser (6-07) and Arvada West senior Mason Lusche (6-05). — Kyle Newman

Special Olympic/Paralympic sprints (3:32 p.m.): In the mixed 100-meter Special Olympic/Paralympic race, Mountain View freshman Alonso Lopez won with a time of 13.17, edging Broomfield junior Alistaire Shirazi (13.40), Roosevelt senior Isaiah Sprague (13.45), and Niwot freshman Isaiah Richart (13.64). In the 200-meter Special Olympic/Paralympic race, Richart (26.56), Sprague (27.78) and Lopez (27.78) went one-two-three. — Kyle Newman

State records fall in 4×200 relay (3:14 p.m.): It was only the prelims, but Holyoke set a new 2A state meet record in the 4×200 boys relay. The Dragons’ quartet of Trey Oakley, Tyler Bergstrom, Luke Roberts and Reid Sprague rolled in the first preliminary heat, finishing in 1:29.95. The previous 2A state meet record was set by Wray in 2010, at 1:30.11. Just a few minutes later, Harrison joined the record-breaking party in a 3A prelim. The Panthers’ quartet of Maurice Martin, Janoah Brown, Ricahrd Murphy and Gulong Craft clocked in at 127.78, which bested Elizabeth’s previous standard set last year by .03. — Corey Masisak

5A triple jump results (1:28 p.m.): Cherokee Trail senior Kaeli Powe won her second straight triple jump title with a leap of 41 feet, 4.5 inches on her final jump of the day. That would’ve been a new 5A state meet record, if not for the wind: The wind was +2.9, and the threshold for any record to count is +2.0. On the boys side, Northfield senior Matthew Kwong won with a jump of 46 feet, 3.75 inches to beat the defending champion, senior Elijah Roy of Pine Creek, by an inch. — Kyle Newman

3,200-meter relay results (11:17 a.m.): Northfield, in its first year in Class 5A after moving up from 4A, won the boys 3,200-meter relay in dramatic fashion. The Nighthawks, who won the 4A overall boys crown last year, pulled out a thriller over Mountain Vista. Northfield anchor Ayuub Hassan edged Mountain Vista anchor Benjamin Anderson in a back-and-forth final lap as Northfield won by a tenth of a second, 7:51:26 to 7:51:36. Anderson dove at the finish and got track burn, but Hassan still outpaced him over the line. Meanwhile, in the girls 3,200-meter relay, Cherry Creek beat Mountain Vista, 9:10:27 to 9:13:56. — Kyle Newman

More Niwot domination (11:04 a.m.): The Niwot track and field program may be best known for its distance runners, but Jade West is doing her best to change that. The senior thrower claimed the Class 4A girls discus title for the second year in a row with a throw of 133 feet, 7 inches. While that did not eclipse last year’s winning mark of 137-9, it did give West the first half of a potential throwing double at the state meet. She’s won the other half, the 4A girls shot put, two years in a row. So it’s safe to say she’s on track. — Matt Schubert

Three-peat (10:58 a.m.): Niwot’s Addison Ritzenhein’s stranglehold on the Class 4A girls 3,200 meter race continued Thursday morning, as the junior breezed to her third straight state title in the event. The former Gatorade national cross country runner of the year pulled away from the pack and crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 27.80 seconds — nearly 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up Chamorra Cooper of Air Academy. Ritzenhein, the daughter of former 5,000 U.S. record holder and Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein, now has four individual state titles to her name and could add two more this weekend in the 800 and 1,600. Either way, she’s now one year away from a career sweep in the 3,200. Not. Too. Shabby.

This being Niwot, Ritzenhein wasn’t the only distance runner to come away with gold on the first two finals of the meet. Junior Ryder Keeton, who entered the 4A boys race as the fifth seed, edged out Cheyenne Mountain’s Brogan Collins to claim his first individual state track and field title. Keeton finished in 9:02.44, with Collins just behind him in 9:03.22 and Niwot teammate Hunter Robbie in third in 9:03.40. A heck of a start for a Niwot program looking to win the boys and girls team titles in the same year for the second time since 2021.  — Matt Schubert

And we’re off (8 a.m.): The first day of state track is off and running. Outside of a few distance and relay finals, today is a day mostly reserved for field championship events and preliminary races. A few things we’ll have our eye on: 1.) Niwot junior Addison Ritzenhein is going for her third consecutive title in the Class 4A girls 3,200 meter run. She’s halfway to a career sweep in the event. 2.) Cherokee Trail senior Kaeli Powe is set to defend her Class 5A girls triple jump crown. The Central Florida commit has one of the top five marks in the country this spring and is certain to put on a show. 3.) Cherry Creek senior Soren Shinofield, who’s committed to play football for the Utah Utes, is the favorite to claim the Class 5A boys shot put crown. 4.) A long jump showdown in the Class 4A boys meet, where Roosevelt’s Jayden Nohr faces off against Lewis-Palmer senior Jamesly Kelly-Cannon and Palmer Ridge senior Jonathan Rice. — Matt Schubert
